atma.io is an open API-based platform that provides a set of developer modules to authenticate devices or products, manage their inventory, and trace them throughout their lifecycle. To add an additional layer of trust to the atma.io platform, the Avery Dennison team wanted to leverage a public ledger to provide greater assurances and product tracking. Over the course of 2022, atma.io will start logging billions of item-level data transactions, using the Hedera Consensus Service (HCS). By leveraging HCS, atma.io will deliver immutable verifiability of provenance for products within their customers’ supply chains.

Carbon accounting and reduction with Hedera

atma.io is scaling beyond traditional supply chain events to account for carbon emissions at a granular level using the Hedera Consensus Service (HCS) and Hedera Token Service (HTS). atma.io will also leverage the Guardian solution, an open-source tokenization service that makes creating and discovering ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) assets easy. This will allow atma.io customers across numerous verticals to account for their emissions and enable carbon reductions within the atma.io connected product cloud.

Product authenticity with Hedera

Public ledgers offer a new way to record transactions that are genuinely immutable and tamper-proof. By recording events to a ledger, any party can transparently understand and trust the provenance of information. An implementation that benefits from this immutable provenance is tracking the authenticity of a product.

atma.io allows for products – their creation, transfer between partners, and eventual sale – to be verifiably recorded on Hedera. To achieve this, atma.io uses the scalable and low-cost Hedera Consensus Service (HCS). HCS makes it possible for businesses to create their own ledger with public trust. For atma.io customers, this results in:

Transaction hashes with Hedera Consensus Service

When a supply chain event occurs, the holistic item-level product metadata is hashed and sent as an HCS message to Hedera, acting as an immutable 'product birth certificate.' atma.io utilizes HCS topics so that each manufacturer has its own partition for storing immutable product records, which are later on checked for integrity. Working as a unique ID for the product, we can now trace the product through a series of HCS messages. Downstream applications or end-users can, at any time, recalculate the series of hashes to verify the product's entire history.

A trusted physical products ecosystem

The atma.io connected product cloud platform allows for applications to consume their backend data. An example of this in action, using Hedera, is the SUSTAIN module of SUKU's Omni offering.
