Turning everyday bank deposits into liquidity for an open FX market

YieldFX is a digital finance platform bridging regulated banking and decentralized finance. Built on Hedera, it combines a tokenized, multi-currency deposit platform with FLEX, a hybrid FX exchange that blends on-chain and off-chain liquidity. Savers and small businesses gain simple access to interest-bearing deposits in currencies around the world, while payment companies, FX providers, and fintechs gain a new liquidity layer for cross-border transactions.

Problem

Foreign exchange is the largest financial market in the world, but it still runs largely over the counter, through dealer networks and bilateral relationships. Building a new FX market requires significant balance-sheet capital, so liquidity concentrates in a handful of major pairs. The US dollar is on one side of 89% of all FX trades. Payment and remittance companies source FX from fragmented providers, and savers in emerging markets have few simple ways to hold, move, or earn on foreign currency.

Solution

YieldFX combines two layers on Hedera. The first is a tokenized, multi-currency deposit platform. Users hold deposits at regulated partner banks, represented on-chain as currency tokens. They can move between currencies instantly, with no lock-ins or minimums, and interest is paid daily. The second layer is FLEX, an FX exchange that pools on-chain and off-chain liquidity into a single source. Depositors can stake their tokenized deposits into FLEX liquidity pools to earn additional yield. In effect, this crowdsources the balance sheet that new FX markets need.

Tokenized deposits built for banks and regulators

Building a new FX market has always required deep balance sheets. As a result, liquidity stays concentrated in a few major currencies, and savers in emerging markets have limited access to foreign currency yield. YieldFX takes a different approach. It tokenizes deposits held at regulated banks, and depositors can stake those tokens into FLEX, its hybrid exchange on Hedera. That turns everyday savings into the liquidity new FX corridors need, while depositors earn both interest and additional yield.

YieldFX chose tokenized deposits over stablecoins deliberately. Markets with capital controls, such as India, are unlikely to let open-ended stablecoins circulate freely. Tokenized deposits fit within existing banking frameworks because each token represents a real deposit at a regulated bank. Partner banks issue the deposits, and YieldFX operates the platform.

Banks gain new depositors without taking on onboarding, marketing, or servicing costs, and in return they offer competitive rates. A sponsor bank has agreed in principle to support five currencies at launch, and each new currency requires only a new sponsor bank. Every deposit is issued as a Hedera Token Service (HTS) token, with Hedera Smart Contract Service governing minting, burning, and redemption mechanisms.

Crowdsourcing liquidity with hybrid market making

FLEX combines automated market maker pools on Hedera with quotes from off-chain FX providers, routing each trade to the best available price. On-chain trades are simple token swaps. Off-chain counterparties, which typically won’t lock capital on a blockchain, are handled differently. FLEX books the trade with the provider and executes it instantly on-chain using liquidity borrowed from staked deposits. It then settles with the provider on a netted basis at the end of the day.

Hedera Consensus Service provides a transparent record where smart contracts would create a bottleneck. The result is a liquidity flywheel: more deposits deepen liquidity, deeper liquidity tightens pricing, tighter pricing attracts trading, and trading yield draws in more deposits.

Launching in the US – India corridor

YieldFX launches first in the US – India corridor, which combines high FX volume, large diaspora flows, and strong demand for foreign currency deposits. It is establishing its regulatory foundation in GIFT City and working with the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) on licensing for its deposit platform, exchange, and currency funds.

Its first consumer product is FlyNest, a multi-currency education savings account for Indian families funding study abroad. Families save in the currencies they’ll need, earn interest along the way, and pay tuition directly through partners such as Convera. FlyNest launches in India in early 2027, followed by FLEX.

Opening FX to emerging currencies

Currencies outside the G10 remain thin and costly to trade. YieldFX sees tokenized deposits as a way to give them the liquidity and exchange access they have never had. In the same way large segments of India skipped landlines and went straight to mobile technology, emerging currencies could bypass traditional FX markets and move directly to open, on-chain liquidity – a real-world demonstration of what the democratization of access to financial instruments enables.

Why Hedera?

Hedera is the core engine of YieldFX’s platform. Hedera Token Service provides the native compliance controls that regulated deposits require, including KYC flags and the ability to freeze and unfreeze accounts. Hedera’s account model separates keys from accounts and supports multi-key structures and key rotation. That means a lost key never has to mean lost funds, which is non-negotiable for bank customers.

Fixed, USD-denominated fees matter in a business where margins are measured in basis points. The team saw the alternative firsthand on Ethereum on a previous venture, where the minting cost of a tokenized asset budgeted at $5 spiked to $70 – 80 in the midst of network congestion. The backing of Hedera Council also helps YieldFX present itself to banks and regulators as an innovator built on well-governed infrastructure. YieldFX’s work is supported by a strategic grant from the Hedera Foundation, announced in July 2025.
