Decentralized identifiers and managed credentials

The Hedera Consensus Service, using the open DID specification developed by the W3C DID working group, offers developers building on Hedera the ability to manage credentials through their lifecycle in a secure, standards-based and privacy respecting manner.

OPEN STANDARDS

Hedera's credentials follow the decentralized identifier and verifiable credentials standards under development at the W3C.

EASY-TO-USE SDK

The Hedera DID SDK for Java makes it easy to publish and resolve DID documents, issue verifiable credentials and control their validity status.

HIGH-THROUGHPUT USE CASES

Hedera is massively scalable, incredibly efficient and uniquely offers consensus timestamps, enabling support for trusted high-volume device identity use cases across supply chain, IoT, and more.
HH ID DIDSDK BG HH ID Mobile DIDSDK BG
HH ID DIDSDK Step1
CREDENTIAL ISSUED
Issuer signs a set of identity attributes for a user and gives to user for storage
HH ID DIDSDK Step2
ISSUANCE RECORDED
Metadata for credential recorded via an HCS message
HH ID DIDSDK Step3
CREDENTIAL USED
User presents credential as part of authentication process at some application/resource
HH ID DIDSDK Step4
METADATA RETRIEVED
Relying party retrieves timestamped metadata in order to validate credential
HH ID DIDSDK Step5
CREDENTIAL REVOKED
When necessary, issuer can revoke the credential via HCS message
HH ID DIDSDK Step6
CREDENTIAL USED
The next time the credential is presented, authentication fails
How the DID SDK Works

Applications issuing credentials to an end user, as well as every event in the credential’s lifecycle, are recorded on Hedera. When a credential is presented to an application or business, supporting information is securely retrieved to either validate or lookup related identity information.

Build decentralized identity into your application

Key moments in a credential's lifecycle can be recorded using Hedera Consensus Service to add transparency and certainty for each stage.
ServiceNow's cloud-based platform, the Now Platform, delivers digital workflows that create great experiences and unlock productivity for the enterprise. Hedera offers the performance and efficiency necessary for ServiceNow to bring distributed ledger technology to their global user base.
Meeco gives people and organizations the tools to access, control, and create mutual value from personal data, privately, securely, and always with explicit consent. Meeco chose Hedera as their underlying public distributed ledger on which to build a unified wallet offering and SDK.
Earth ID is a decentralized identity platform, aiming to provide a secure, consolidated identity. EarthID uses Hedera as its underlying public ledger for its controlled mutability, guaranteed finality, and security.

W3C DID Working Group

Hedera joined W3C as a member organization and has registered a DID Method to the W3C Credentials Community Group’s Decentralized Identifier (DID) registry. W3C is an international community where member organizations, W3C staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards with an overall mission of leading the Web to its full potential.

Ecosystem Grants

The Hedera ecosystem offers supportive grant programs and accelerators for decentralized identity and privacy-preserving applications.
