Overview

SUKU OMNI uses GS1 standards and the public Hedera network to securely verify the authenticity of products throughout a supply chain.

Challenge

SUKU needed a cost-effective and scalable way to tag and prove the authenticity of products end-to-end in a retail supply chain while improving visibility and product knowledge for their customer’s end users.

Solution

SUKU uses Hedera Hashgraph to strengthen the trust between supply chain partners, their customers, and end-users — this results in financial and opportunistic benefits for platform stakeholders and the market as a whole.

SUKU is the link between open finance, traceability, and transparency — through their trio of product offerings, SUKU OMNI, Infinite, and DeFi, they connect companies with conscious customers and enable supply chain finance. The SUKU OMNI product line addresses a lack of trust between brands and customers, customers and authentic products, and the links between supply chain participants. With a lack of trust across participants, SUKU evaluated various distributed ledger technologies and ultimately migrated from Ethereum to Hedera Hasghraph.

Hedera helps SUKU log an immutable and verifiable stream of events and certifications within their customer’s supply chains. Based on a brand’s requirements, events related to specific products are logged and made verifiable on the public Hedera network, making it accessible to customers to prove authenticity and build trust. Further, if a brand uploads specific certifications, such as ISO, Organic, or Halal, these also become verifiable through Hedera. With Hedera, SUKU is able to increase trust for stakeholders and eliminate the need for permissioned blockchain infrastructure, reducing overall costs and time delays.

Lack of trust between conscious customers, brands, and supply chain participants

Customers today look beyond the label and are more conscious of their purchasing decisions than ever before — wanting to understand from where their products and specific materials within those products are coming. SUKU needed a way to ensure that brands, supply chain participants, and customers could trust products’ provenance across a supply chain.

SUKU evaluated various permissioned and permissionless blockchain frameworks to power its supply chain platform. They took issue with the complexities of managing a decentralized governing body in a permissioned network consortium and wanting to ensure technical expertise for operations, so they decided to choose a public network. SUKU had originally evaluated Ethereum as their first choice to power its platform however they ran into high transaction fees, lackluster performance, and uncertainty long-term governance stability (forking). In 2021, based on projected application usage, SUKU would be paying between $337,500 to $450,000 per year on transaction fees if they had continued using Ethereum, compared to $1.50 to $2.00 USD on Hedera Hashgraph.

“We thought through how to solve the problem of trust between supply chain participants, product manufacturers, and conscious customers — SUKU wants to become the universal symbol of truth for conscious customers and brands;” said Lucas Henning, CTO of SUKU “we required a tool offered low-cost transaction scalability and little to no operational overhead for governance and infrastructure.”

Enabling a trusted supply chain provenance platform with Hedera Hashgraph

SUKU exposes event data to every party in the supply chain, optionally including retail customer’s end-users as a source of truth for conscious customers through a white-labeled OMNI application.

Hedera helps SUKU log an immutable and verifiable stream of events within a supply chain all logged onto the Hedera Consensus Service — these events include things like provenance, product authenticity, and more. SUKU exposes this data to every party in the supply chain, optionally including retail customer’s end-users as a source of truth. Hedera has helped SUKU increase trust for supply chain partners and end-users while eliminating the need for permissioned blockchain infrastructure and reducing overall costs and time delays.
