OVERVIEW

Entrust provides a full-service supply chain solution for better ensuring the authenticity of agricultural products.

CHALLENGE

The market for fraudulent wine is estimated at $3 billion globally each year. This fraud combined with shifting consumer behavior makes the authenticity of a product a growing need.

SOLUTION

Entrust selected Hedera to provide a trusted mechanism to track and track agriculture supply chain across wine and similar verticals.

In the past decade, consumer behavior has shifted to make the origin of a product be a competitive advantage. Not only does a supply chain become a way to operate efficiently, but also presents data to better prove the authenticity of a crop or that glass of wine. Furthermore, businesses are being challenged by competitors selling fraudulent products. For instance, claiming that wine came from a more desirable region to co-opt the market at a lower, but deceptive price.

Entrust, led by foremost experts in the wine industry, set out to put an end to fraud by providing a robust platform for trusted agriculture supply chain information. The company started with the goal of helping to solve the estimated $3 billion annual global wine fraud by securing the integrity of a bottle from grape to glass. This constitutes a complete solution from securing the bottle itself to tracking the data in a verifiable and trusted way.

Blockchain, or distributed ledgers, are helpful for achieving a higher level of data integrity than is possible with a centralized database. With it, 3rd parties like auditors or consumers are more readily able to understand the contextual information – who sent the data and when it was sent – in a tamper-proof way. Entrust, knowing that they wanted to achieve this level of integrity, also wanted to achieve a low-cost and high-performance solution. The latency of which had to be low enough to not interfere with someone entering the information in the field.

Wanting to look towards a public ledger, in an effort to lower operating costs and act as a neutral, decentralized infrastructure the team selected Hedera Hashgraph. To log the events of the supply chain the platform uses the Hedera Consensus Service. A topic-based approach to managing events, each update of the supply chain is sent to the defined topic and immutably recorded. Each event sent to Hedera requires a signature and receives a consensus timestamp, allowing for Entrust to surface a complete history of the supply chain.

At the time of this writing, Entrust has successfully completed its first pilot. Working with over 15 wineries to ensure they’re able to match Australia’s label integrity program regulations. As the platform matures they aim to solve problems in adjacent agricultural verticals.
