Overview

Hala Systems is a social enterprise focused on developing effective, technology-driven solutions to the world's toughest humanitarian challenges. Hala is currently focused on civilian protection, accountability, and the prevention of violent extremism before, during, and after conflict.

Challenge

To allow civillians to report on events in a trusted way, this information must be protected and preserved, allowing 3rd parties and potentially the broader public to trust its integrity.

Solution

Hala Systems uses the Hedera Consensus Service to log each piece of media’s metadata. Thus providing a tamper-proof, cryptographically secure record of evidence.

Hala Systems works to protect assets and civilians through humanitarian crises. Throughout the Syrian refugee crisis, Hala Systems’ application Sentry has enabled civilians to capture images and record video to act as an early warning system. When an image can make or break a case for the world’s most vulnerable, Hala Systems wanted to ensure the media could be indisputable.

In order to achieve that level of trust to manage the metadata of this media, Hala Systems looked towards blockchain, or a distributed ledger. A system designed to exude trust with tamper-proof data managed by a decentralized network. Initially starting with Ethereum, high gas fees and low throughput made their desire to scale to potentially millions of users impractical.

For a more scalable solution, Hala Systems selected Hedera Hashgraph. Utilizing the hashgraph consensus algorithm the Hedera network can scale to tens of thousands of transactions per second with low-latency finality. Furthermore, having transactions based in predictable, USD Hala Systems was able to better align their business model with their desired infrastructure.

With Hedera, Hala Systems can now collect digital evidence of human rights violations and prove the integrity of the data.

To log their content’s metadata the Sentry application uses Hedera Consensus Service. Each creation event records over 30 pieces of information to the Hedera network, receiving a verifiable and tamper-proof audit log to provide to potential 3rd parties.
