Hedera is open source as Hiero
Hedera is an open source public network, where anyone can build applications or share data. Its entire codebase has been contributed to Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust as Project Hiero, making Hedera the first Layer 1 to ever contribute its code to a neutral, third-party foundation.
What is Hiero?
As a Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust project, Hiero gives builders confidence that Hedera technology will always be maintained by a neutral, independent foundation. It’s designed to last, with open contributions from developers everywhere, helping to strengthen and evolve the code for the future.

How Hedera ensures quality in Hiero release schedules
This article explains how the consensus node codebase evolves over time, the purpose of each environment, and what Hedera’s move to open-source development (via Project Hiero) means for this process. Dive into the three public network environments on Hedera–previewnet, testnet and mainnet, and how each serve a different role in the release process and developer ecosystem.
Hiero is the first Layer 1 public network to contribute its code to a neutral foundation. This shows the importance of open governance and open development and we’re honored Linux Foundation was chosen with our over 20+ years of experience open sourcing important projects. Hedera’s commitment to community, governance, and open source development has been a cornerstone for its success.
